Mark Steven Johnson Answers Your Questions
August 31, 2006
Hey guys, thanks for checking out the Official Ghost Rider site. A lot of you have written in asking me questions about the movie. I'll do my best to keep you up to date as we get closer and closer to February 16th.
MSJ

Ghost Rider Questions

Shawn S: What's the film making experience like when shooting a flick about a character that's loved by so many fans?

MSJ: Well, the good news is that I AM one of those fans so I've done my best to pay tribute to the Marvel comic character. I grew up with Ghost Rider and just like some of you I've waited a long time to see a Ghost Rider movie. There's a lot of pressure to make good on that but it's pressure that I welcome. I'm hopeful that the movie will introduce the Ghost Rider to a whole new generation of fans while reminding the faithful why he's the coolest character in the Marvel Universe!

Edwin P: What I was wondering, who designed and built that awesome bike, because that's a totally new cool look for the movie adaptation!

MSJ: Thanks, I think so too! Although I kept the look of the Ghost Rider close to the 90's era comics, I did feel that the motorcycle could be improved upon. I always liked that the Batmobile looked like Batman and likewise I felt that the Ghost Rider's cycle should resemble the Ghost Rider. Early concept art by Crash McCreery helped me explore this idea until we came up with the look you see now. It's a bit Geiger in design but without being sci-fi. Hellfire, in our movie, affects metal in a specific way -- from the spikes on G.R.'s leather jacket, to the motorcycle, to a shotgun. All are given a "personality" and a look of our hero. We discussed having a Jesse James or O.C.C. build the bike, but in the end what we wanted was fantasy, not realism, and the building of the bike fell under my excellent Production Designer, Kirk Petrucelli.

Steven B: I was hoping you could let me know if there are any intentions on releasing a Ghost Rider album besides the Christopher Young score. Have there been any final selections of songs from artists yet?

MSJ: A soundtrack or score is definitely a possibility but nothing has been decided at this time. That being said, Christopher Young wrote a beautiful score that is exactly what the movie is -- a horror/western hybrid. There are a few songs in the movie but I should reserve comment until the deals are closed. My good friends from Spiderbait did a few songs for the flick too, including a cover of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" that really kicks ass. If you don't know Spiderbait you should check them out ("Tonight Alright" in particular).

Bryan S: OK, first I wanna say I love Nicholas Cage. He's definitely in my top 5 favorite actors and it's great to see him as a superhero, but I have to ask - Why did you chose Nic? Any particular reason?

MSJ: He's one of my favorite actors, too! He's also one of my favorite people. I've always looked at Ghost Rider as a classic monster movie. And there's a part of Nic that reminds me of Lon Chaney. Nic enjoys changing his look from movie to movie; he's not afraid to alter his face and body to totally inhabit a role. I think you'll agree that the Nic in GHOST RIDER and the Nic in ADAPTATION look nothing alike! That ability gives us not only Johnny Blaze, but the Ghost Rider inside of Johnny Blaze. Nic is a huge fan of Ghost Rider as well. He loves the character and has been a part of it's development for a long time. So it wasn't really a matter of me choosing Nic, it was really a matter of Nic believing in me and the story that I wanted to tell.

Tyson A: When was Ghost Rider made? What comic book was he first seen in? What kind of weapons does he have?

MSJ: The first Ghost Rider was a western comic put out by Marvel back in 1949, then later re-imagined by writers Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich in 1967. The Ghost Rider as we know him today was first introduced back in 1972 in Marvel Spotlight Vol. 1 by Thomas and Friedrich. Ghost Rider's weapons are many: his superhuman strength, his heavy chain which he used like a whip, his ability to manipulate fire, his motorcycle, which can ride up buildings, and probably most importantly, the Penance Stare. The Penance Stare is a look that the Ghost Rider gives his victims which sears the victim's soul -- it doesn't kill, but it makes the sinner feel all of the sins he's ever committed to others. Death would be a welcome relief to anyone suffering the Ghost Rider's Penance Stare!

Steven B: Will Ghost Rider still fight against those who shed innocent blood?

MSJ: Big time. You'll see!

JW: If this film does well will we see a sequel?

MSJ: Absolutely. We'd all love to do one as long as it improves upon the original.

Joseph M: Can you make a Ghost Rider video game?

MSJ: It's already being developed by 2k Games and Climax. The game will be released to coincide with the movie. In the meantime, check out the site from time to time -- there's a new game coming and it's cool!

oh wow! msj answered 2 of my questions. thank you so much mr. johnson! this is really terrific having a director/screenwriter like you really paying genuine respect to the fans and taking time to come to the blog, message boards, and what not. thank you so much!

First of all, I'd like to say am a HUGE fan of Ghost Rider and everything I've seen so far has looked awesome!! I love the mix of the different flameheads of the past. I think I remember you saying that the Ghost Rider will speak in the movie. Any idea on how he will sound and how it might be done?

Posted by: Dale Griffitts on 09/01/06 at 05:10 AM

I love Ghost Rider. I saw the teaser trailer the other day, and I was FLOORED. I cannot wait for 2007 to come. I think you'll do a damned good job. But any thought on how GR is going to sound?

Posted by: Geoff B on 09/01/06 at 10:28 AM

Well... I guess because the Rider is a "specter in flames", he can speak without human organs. He comes from Hell, and he doesn't need such equipment, you know! :DDDDDD

+ But I don't know what drift he has of speek...

Posted by: Frank on 09/01/06 at 10:50 AM

Props to you , Mark , for taking the time to talk to the fans instead of being 'too busy' for us . I hope this flick is huge for you .
(And for the people who don't see how GR can speak or fill his leathers without a 'body' ... ectoplasm . Now you know .)

MSJ, great job. You've earned the respect of those that truly get comics and also those that just want to see a good action film with good characters.

Posted by: Christian on 09/02/06 at 02:53 PM

Im a really big fan of comic book characters be it from marvel or dc. I am eagerlly anticipating for this movie "GhostRider", I have read the comics and have seen the trailer and its really great! hope we see more marvel comic characters come to the silver screen from director Mark Steven Johnson.

Posted by: JR Miranda on 09/02/06 at 04:32 PM

Big fan of the 90's series of old Flame Head and, after seeing the trailer, i cant wait to see the movie but i'm a little concerned that there will be too many "amazing CGI" and not enough story (like the a recent mutant related movie).

Posted by: Andrew on 09/04/06 at 06:57 AM

Ghost Rider is the coolest Marvel character and I can't wait for the movie!

Posted by: Fowler on 09/05/06 at 07:28 AM

Hey MSJ, I love DareDevil and this movie looks like your gunna out do yourself best of luck on everything, I'm hoping for a sequel you rock. My question is that I wanted to know did you ever have a full size Hell Bike with like blue tires? Also when GR's just walking around was it Nic Cage with a blue bag on his head?

Adam

P.s. When I saw the trailer for the first time at X3 all I was blown away.

Posted by: Adam Sehy on 09/05/06 at 09:10 AM

Hey, I'm a big fan of the Ghost Rider series, and I was just wondering who has been your fav. writer for him? Mine would definitely have to be Garth Ennis, the man's a god.

Posted by: Bobby on 09/06/06 at 12:34 AM

i love the trailer and can't wait for the movie

Posted by: MARKUS on 09/06/06 at 03:01 PM

I noticed on the trailer a rider on the horse in flames. Would that have come from the orignal makings of Ghost Rider? I have collected Just about everything Ghost Rider I could including the #1 issue of Ghost Rider as a man in a white outfit on a white horse. B.T.W. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Thanks.

Posted by: Richard B on 09/06/06 at 03:26 PM

Ghost Rider should be kick ass, I love the horror western hybrids ever since I first saw Near Dark. I hope the studio doesn't screw with this, cause Daredevil D.C. was way better than Theatrical version. I hope this PG-13 rating means it's not watered down for the stupid teeny boppers.

Posted by: Lab Rat on 09/08/06 at 07:06 AM

Cant wait to see his Penance Stare and Holy Shotgun in action!!!! The bike looks sweet!!!

Posted by: Joshua on 09/08/06 at 09:30 AM

Thanks again Mr. Johnson for answering my questions. I just wanted to say that I just bought Spiderbait's album "Tonite Alright" and loved it! They're one of my new favorites!

Posted by: Steven on 09/08/06 at 04:18 PM

whoa. msj answred all my questions.

Posted by: chip on 09/09/06 at 04:24 PM

I can hardly wait til this movie premieres. Nicholas Cage will sure capture audiences within all genre tastes...I presume. He is a terrific actor. I will have tos agree with previous PG-13 comments of tearing down the action for teeny boppers. After all, teens aren't quite teens any more

Good One Mike. Keep up your work

God Bless

Posted by: mike o on 09/10/06 at 05:36 PM

I look forward to your take on GR Mark. After this movie, are there any other comicbook movies you want to tackle, or will you be burned out of the genre and want to do something else. Thanks for your attention to the source material!

Posted by: Damian on 09/11/06 at 03:43 PM

If you're a Spiderbait fan Mark then you can't go past their '92 album "Shashavaglava". Melbourne rock at it's best.

Posted by: D on 09/12/06 at 07:36 PM

It looks like this movie its going to be really awesome!!! so I hope that they have already started on the sequel already so it comes out soon after the first one, oh and one more thing props to the people that made this movie possible.

Posted by: Tyler Santos on 09/13/06 at 10:10 AM

I love everything I have seen so far, but why are you waiting till Feb of 2007 to release it?

Posted by: Ricard on 09/13/06 at 05:42 PM

dude. ive loved ghostrider 4 time. does cage still have his normal voice when ghost rider talks?

Posted by: SKARR on 09/15/06 at 12:15 PM

This may be stating the obvious and a little late in production but I only found this site today. I know - not looking very hard (haha). If you do original songs you should check out "Ghost Rider" by Canadian band RUSH on the Vapor Trails album (sorry showing my age) CD, which deals with internal conflict.

Posted by: YYZ on 09/18/06 at 07:07 PM

Ghost Rider was always one of my favorites in the Marvel-Universe and I really hope the movie will get a good translation into the german language as the rest of the last Marvel-Themed-Flicks.
(What I have seen so far looks really great - but not any European understands the amrican language as well as I do...)
So I wish you a good translation, because on it depends much of the success of a movie over here.

Posted by: Spider-Man_from_Austria on 09/22/06 at 12:26 PM

Ive loved ghost rider ever since i picked up a comic in 1996....i cant wait for the movie to come out!!

I have been a fan of Ghost Rider since I was a little kid. I always loved motorcycles and that drew me to Ghost Rider I am now 35 and a Master Harley Mechanic and still love bikes and Ghost Rider and have a pretty good collection of G.R. memorabalia. The Movie has gotten me all excited like a little kid again. So far everything I see I love. Cant wait til the release.

Posted by: Joe Roller on 09/28/06 at 06:55 PM

is jhonny blaze gonna use his hell gun u know that sawed off shotgun he got?

Posted by: Mike E. on 09/28/06 at 08:17 PM

You have made my dream come true man. When I was a young kid my dad would always take me and my brother out to eat on Fridays, and we would go to the comic shop afterwards. Ghost Rider has always been my favorite, always been the most exciting. To see him on the big screen, with my all time favorite actor playing him, was basically you guys reading my mind. The movie looks absolutely perfect. However, when you mentioned a sequel in a previous comment, do you plan on stickin with Cage, or are you planning on switching from Johnny to Dan? Personally I believe the transition to another character would just confuse people who haven't followed the stories outside the movie.

Posted by: Thomas Keyes on 09/28/06 at 09:18 PM

Cant u [put the release forward my m8 at working bin throwing a fit for last 6 months now, he's like collected every issue of the comic since the first 1 released so he a big fan, basicly release it early like xmas time coz get annoying. Anyway film looking great and be well worth seeing it

Posted by: Gary G on 09/29/06 at 12:31 AM

THIS FILM WILL ROCK!!! I have to say that I'm tooooo excited to see Wes Bentley in Ghost Rider opposite of Nick Cage!! Is Wes' character part of the video game?

Posted by: Nick Zalvio on 09/29/06 at 12:01 PM

In the comic who was your favorite Ghost Rider?

Posted by: Tyson S. on 09/29/06 at 01:00 PM

I am anxiously waiting this film and I would like to know if there is a sequel, is there any thoughts on who would be the villain? I know it might be too early to tell for sure, but one can always speculate.

Posted by: Chad C on 09/29/06 at 04:24 PM

Im not a real big time fan, but i have some of the comics and I would like to say i love nic as an actor and my mom's friend would like to marry him anyways I can't wait for the movie it looks great thanks for making it! I hope you make sequel!

Posted by: ahmad feyzian on 09/30/06 at 05:18 AM

I must admit I was not a big fan of Daredevil. However, everything I'm seeing so far from Ghost Rider looks good. The key is that this seems much more faithfull to the comics. So I want to say thank you for respecting the creators, the character, and the fans by bringing this character to life as he is. I'll be there with bells on.

Posted by: Frantz K on 09/30/06 at 08:07 AM

Dear Mark,

OK, so I know Nic Cage will be playing Johnny Blaze in the movie, but will he be voicing Ghost Rider, too? Come to think of it, will GR even talk in the movie AT ALL. I REALLY don't want him to be like Ang Lee's verson of the Hulk, where he NEVER said anything, and just grunted and roared the whole time!!!!!

P.S. Two more things: First off, I personally think Ghost Rider is the BADDEST CHARACTER IN THE HISTORY OF MARVEL COMICS!!!!! Eat your heart out, Blade! Lastly, will you please post and answer my main question

P.P.S. Sorry you never got around to Daredevil 2. The first one was great, though!

Posted by: Stephen Kidd on 09/30/06 at 11:54 AM

First I wanna say thanks for answering my question. that's cool, but unfortunately for me I've only seen a couple of Nic's movies. I have never seen Adaptation, I really wanna now. I can't wait for the movie. As of now, hopefully I will be there on opening night.

GOD BLESS! and i hope the making process and your life goes great!

Posted by: Bryan S. on 09/30/06 at 12:38 PM

I am a Ghost Rider freak. I have Most of the comic books from all series.

Posted by: Dave S on 09/30/06 at 02:33 PM

I've been a big fan for many years, and am finally glad to hear he is coming to the big screen. Initially I was worried about the quality - I just wasn't sure if anyone would be able to bring the GR character to the screen doing him any justice. From what I have seen however, it really appears like it will be done right - getting Sam Elliot and Nic Cage involved with a really good special effects setup sure seals the deal. Thanks MSJ.

Posted by: Ty R. on 09/30/06 at 03:05 PM

Have been reading GR since I was a kid in the 70's.Loved the remake of the 90's also,am glad they used that as a template and added the flaming wheels on the bike while still adding some classic stuff. After seeng Cage in the trailer I know he will do a great job on playing Johnny B. If they do a sequel I hope the have Vengence in it somehow,he is pretty cool too.

Posted by: Darkman on 10/01/06 at 07:02 AM

With the popularity of the "Ghost Rider" magazine, Harley-Davidsons and heavy metal cruisers in general "Ghost Rider" could quickly become a cult classic! The skull/flames has always been an icon in motorcycling!

Posted by: Highwayman on 10/01/06 at 02:50 PM

Hi! i can't wait to wachted the movie that your doing right now! by the way how's the video going on? thanks

Posted by: steven on 10/01/06 at 10:00 PM

i think the movie is going to be great i really want to see it

Posted by: sebastian on 10/02/06 at 01:52 PM

looks terrific and to answer Richard's question i believe tht is the Phantom Rider he has his own lil short comic at the end of some of the old comics

Posted by: Louie G on 10/06/06 at 07:38 PM

I was wondering what type/model the bike is that transforms into the Hellcycle? Is there any plans for a promo giveaway of one like it-similar to the X-Men V-Rod contest?

Posted by: Brian on 10/07/06 at 04:44 PM

is the blackheart in the movie the same as the blackheart in marvel comics, marvel legends?

Posted by: isaiah m on 10/12/06 at 08:00 PM

I would just like to say that Ghost rider looks awesome and that I can't wait to see it on the big screen.i don't know that much about the character because I am a new fan but this movie looks awesome!I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THIS AND SPIDER MAN 3 IN 2007.i am sure they will both be great movies and am really loking forward to it.

Posted by: Liam Wilson on 10/15/06 at 11:34 AM

Can you explain some of the special effects? Will Nicolas Cage really be flaming?

Posted by: Joel on 10/16/06 at 09:16 AM

Are you planning to make a second movie for Ghost Riders

Posted by: Jared Quass on 10/27/06 at 09:29 AM

I have watched the new clip 5 times now and it is great! The visuals are incredible and the sound effects are great too! The sounds of the hellbike on full throttle sends shiver up the spine. What could GR possibly defeat in a sequel that beats fighting Blackheart, the son of the devil?

Posted by: Dave S. on 11/03/06 at 11:03 PM

First of all I want to thank all of you who worked very hard to make this movie. I love Hollywood movies; I often think how I could live without watching all those Action, Thriller, Sci-fi, Horror and those movies which are made from all kind of Action-Horror comic books. When I first saw the news and trailer in the apple movie trailers web site that the ‘GHOST RIDER’ is coming, My eyes were wide open and the I just said ‘HOLY COW ATLAST IT’S COMING AS A MOVIE, COOL’ And I think ‘Nicolas Cage’ is the perfect man for it, I love his movies and he is a great actor. And the trailers are awesome; I just pray that this movie will be a great Hit. But I have something to say and don’t take it otherwise. I’m from a very poor country; maybe you people never heard my country name. I’m from Bangladesh and here in our country we don’t have any good theater and new released English movies are not shown in those theaters, we are hopeless and also helpless for that cause our Government not allows any foreign movies in the theaters to be shown. They says if the foreign films will be released here then our film industry will be vanish. And let me tell you about our country movies, those are full of bull. And the cool movie freak like us has no way to enjoy those movies in theaters. And for that we had to wait for the DVD version. And it takes 5 to 6 months to come here after release of those movies in your theaters. I’m so sorry for my long lines; I don’t wanna bore you people to tell all this stuffs, because it’s not your problem. But I can’t help to stop my frustration about all this matters.

Thank you all again to make this movie.

Good Luck and Take Care

Hi, im a big fan of ghost rider. I heard on wikipedia that blackheart was supposed to turn into his comicbook form at the end of the movie. Is that true? And, if yes, will mephisto?

Posted by: Kieran on 12/04/06 at 08:18 AM

Hi, im a big fan of Ghost Rider(actually, hes my favourite character!). Im collecting the new comic and everything! But now, for the questions. Why did you not pick an enemy of Ghost Riders like the orb or someone else? 2) And, I can guess from viewing the trailer, that there will be a fight between Blackheart and Ghost Rider. Will there be a fight between Ghost Rider and Mephisto? 3) Will we ever see Vengeance? Well, thats all for now, so bye and merry Christmas!

Posted by: Kieran on 12/06/06 at 10:16 AM

Hey, MSJ I just have to say this: Your my idol. Ok, done. So why did you pick Jonny Blaze for the movie, and not Daniel Ketch?

Posted by: Johnny Blaze on 12/13/06 at 09:38 AM

I love the actors that are in this movie, I'm a huge Nick Cage, Sam Elliot and Peter Fonda fan. Can't wait to watch Eva too.

Posted by: Joanna Smith on 01/14/07 at 06:49 PM

Is the Care taker also a Ghost Rider?

Posted by: Sirius on 01/17/07 at 04:32 PM

ok you said that Kirk Petrucelli is the one who designed the hell cycle, but who built it?

Posted by: robert on 01/19/07 at 08:28 PM

Can someone please tell me who does the V.O. (narration) in the trailer for this film? His voice is very distinctive and I think he is an older actor who was in a couple of westerns. Anyone? Jeez this is gonna bug me!

Posted by: Em. on 01/22/07 at 09:29 PM

In the movie trailer, continuity wasn't maintained when one shot of the scooter was in reverse, showing the S&S style air cleaner on the wrong side of the bike. I can't believe with Fonda on the shoot this little tid-bit was not seen in the dailies.

Posted by: Chainsaw on 01/26/07 at 09:50 AM

You rock MSJ I love the movie trailer and are you planning to make a third movie trailer.

Posted by: Jared Quass on 01/29/07 at 03:52 PM

I am unfamiliar with the comic, but the trailer caught my attention. It appeared to me that Ghost rider is in Melbourne Australia crossing the arch of the footbridge to Southbank over the Yarra river. If I go to the movie will I see bits of my favorite city? It really does look like a fun movie!

Posted by: Cathy M. on 02/01/07 at 10:31 PM

I am really a huge fan of Ghost Rider because i really like it and love it alot too. And i want to have a collection of Ghost Rider and especially the movie that is coming out this February 2007.Because it's cool movie and fun. Thanks!!!!

Hi I loved the movie it was awsome! I was wondering where or if there was a way to obtain the Spiderbait version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" they did a great job on it!

Posted by: Justin on 02/22/07 at 12:31 AM

Ive looked all over the web when will Spiderbait be releasing the ghost riders in the sky on an album

Posted by: foster on 02/23/07 at 11:08 AM

I know it's been mentioned before up there, but a "music from and inspired by" CD would be totally awesome. I loved Spiderbait's "Ghost Riders in the Sky" version, and want it on CD soooooooo badly. Do you know when they will be releasing that? Or when ya'll will be releasing a "music from and inspired by" soundtrack?

Posted by: Coyote-Walker on 02/23/07 at 04:38 PM

Does anyone know if there are any Hellcycles up for grabs? I'm talking like, a model or something.

Posted by: BoBoBo-Bo Bo-BoBo on 03/19/07 at 05:12 PM

Has anyone found Spiderbaits' rendition of (Ghost) Riders in the Sky yet? My daughter and I were looking for it last night. Thanks!
